Mountain View Open Floor

Weekly Classes

Open Floor Movement Practice is a lively, sweaty, full-on dance inquiry…

How can we move and include it all – feelings, other people, thoughts, wild passions, limitations? Can we use movement to soften the tight spots in our tender hearts and stretch our capacity for relationship? What happens if we turn old repetitive thoughts into choreography for creative dances?

We start small, end quiet. We respond to obstacles and mind the gaps. Ask, how am I now? What’s possible? Find direction. Add fire. Push the limit. Embrace paradox. There’s an essential movement language we all speak when we take these questions to the dance floor.

We call on universal elements that are inherent in any moving body, such as breath, gravity, centering, expansion and contraction. This is the common ground that all embodiment practices share.

Open Floor is where the rubber meets the road – a place for creative focus and loving attention.

Mountain View Open Floor Class

Mountain View Masonic Lodge ⧫ 890 Church Street, Mountain View, CA

Monday Evenings ⧫ 7:00-9:30 PM
(no admission after 7:30)

Open Floor is a healing movement meditation practice and lively dance inquiry. The emphasis in Open Floor is to awaken our sensate experience, emotional intelligence, relational skills, and our mindful, imaginative, and spiritual awareness.

Our methods are open and exploratory rather than prescribed. Open Floor is designed to support us in moving beyond how we’ve been taught to move (or not). Using our bodies we learn to move along the continuum from fixed/blocked to fluid. We discover how to move from shadow and habit to choice and creative possibility.

Open Floor Refuge: Meditation in Motion

Mountain View Masonic Lodge ⧫ 890 Church Street, Mountain View, CA

Thursday Evenings ⧫ 7:00-9:30 PM
(no admission after 7:20)

For centuries people have used meditation to move beyond the mind’s stress producing thoughts into mindful awareness. There are many meditation techniques and on the Open Floor we have a simple form — we sit, we walk, and we dance in cycles.

Refuge offers us a place to gather each week and practice resting into the non-doing to see what happens.  This is how we build the resilience to respond rather than react to our internal and external stressors. As the quiet voice inside becomes more accessible, life is more spacious, we make better choices, and we have the capacity to meet the unexpected with curiosity.

Requested prerequisite:  20 hours of instructed movement practice (Open Floor, Soul Motion, 5Rhythms®, Movement Medicine, Tai Chi, Yoga, etc.)

What to bring:

    • Water bottle
    • Meditation Cushion or Pillow
    • Layers to keep you warm

Class Fees (cash or check only)

$20 drop-in ⧫ $15 Students w/ID & Seniors (65+) ⧫ 6-Pak of tickets (good for Monday & Thursday Classes)

Women’s Refuge: Mindfulness in Motion

Peninsula Ballet Theatre  ⧫  San Mateo, CA

In this Open Floor experience, we engage in a form of dynamic meditation that utilizes a simple practice of sitting, walking and dancing in cycles. By allowing our experience to unfold and be expressed in the moment, we build the resilience to respond rather than react to internal and external stressors. As the quiet voice inside becomes more accessible and expressed through movement, the capacity to meet the unexpected with curiosity flourishes.
